would a sanding sponge work to smooth out the gesso on canvas?

i wanted to buy this sanding sponge or something similar to this to sand the canvas down. because of all the paint brush strokes on the canvas from the gesso,
would this be ok? would you use this? what do you use to sand your canvases if you make homemade ones.
Dont worry about the paint strokes. It makes for a more interesting texture. If you are insistent on sanding then just do it gently but yes it is ok to do this.
