Emulsion Film

Has anyone scanned negatives without a negative holder?

I'm trying to scan color negatives into the computer. The problem is the negative holder doesn't allow me to scan the emulsion of the film. Is there anyway I can scan the negative without a holder, so that I can get the emulsion as well?

Your question doesn't make much sense - the entire point of a film scanner is to scan film. The holder is just a plastic piece to hold the film in place while travelling thru the scanner. The "emulsion" as you call it IS exposed thru the frames in the holder.

So, I'm not sure if you're confusing the emulsion with something else. Since there is technically no emulsion left once the film is developed. The emulsion is only the light sensitive coating on the film that records the latent image and is later developed. If you're thinking of something else - please update your question and be more specific about what you're trying to say.
