Value of Aztec skull/mask?
I know it’s a pretty ‘priceless’ object and I’m wondering if this is a silly question... But I would like to know how much the ‘mosaic mask of Tezcatlipoca’ (or masks similar to its kind) was bought for by the British Museum or valued at?
I am writing an essay on the relation between modern and ancient art, I know one of the ‘Crystal Skulls’ was bought for $950 a wile back. Damien Hurst’s skull was bought for £50million, I’m just wondering how close the value is of a genuine Aztec skull in relation to Hurst’s.
The mosaic mask was part of the private Christie Collection, which was left in the trust of the British Museum following the death of Henry Christie in 1865.
The Mask itself is a unique and irreplaceable item and due to its historical significance to the people of Mexico it is priceless.
The price of Damian Hirst's skull is mainly due to the frenzy of speculative buying that surrounds his work - which has prompted many people to say that there is a 'contemporary art bubble'.
